About the event
Taking rest as a radical act of resistance for bodies of colour within a white supremacist capitalist patriarchal society, artist and sound therapist Cherelle Sappleton will host an intimate sound bath for deep relaxation. This event will allow participants to be guided into a meditative state of relaxation connecting with the themes of care, presence and healing within Davinia-Ann Robinson's exhibition.
What is a sound bath? A sound bath is a relaxation technique and meditative experience in which participants 'bathe' in the sound waves produced by the human voice as well as instruments such as chimes, gongs, drums and singing bowls. The instruments used have unique sound signatures that elicit a variety of responses in the mind and body. In this session, Cherelle will use crystal singing bowls and her voice with the aim of inducing a deeply relaxed state. You will be asked to lie down with your eyes closed, although sitting up also works if that's more comfortable whilst a soundscape is played to you live. All you need to do is listen, relax and receive.
What do you need to enjoy a sound bath?
— Leave 1-2 hours between eating (eating soon before can cause distraction during the session)
— Jumpers/ layered clothing- it’s important you don’t get cold or too hot as this is likely to bring out of the relaxed state.
— An exercise mat(s)/ cushions/Blankets to lay on. NB the floor at the gallery is hard so please ensure you have something sufficient to lay on.
— A bottle of water.
— Pen and paper
— Some people like to wear an eye mask or something to cover their eyes but it's not essential.
— The sound bath will start at 6pm sharp so please arrive at least 10 minutes before. Late comers will not be admitted.
