Cecilia Brunson Projects is pleased to announce our forthcoming Main Gallery exhibition dedicated to the discipline of tempera painting in Brazil.
The exhibition will feature works by leading proponents of the Brazilian Tempera Revival of the 20th century, including Alfredo Volpi (currently spotlighted in the RA exhibition Brasil! Brasil! The Birth of Modernism), his student Eleonore Koch, and Ione Saldanha.
Works by these modernist masters will be paired with new paintings by São Paulo painter André Ricardo. Having committed years to studying the technique and history of tempera painting in Brazil, he shares an artistic lineage with Volpi, Koch and Saldanha. Through the idiosyncrasies of tempera, he enters into their pictorial world, and into a dialogue around Brazilian identity today.
