Thames-Side Studios Gallery was delighted to present London Graphics curated by Phil Ashcroft; a select crew of Thames-Side Studios-based graphic artists and makers meet London-based painters and designers Ashcroft has worked with or been a fan of over the years.

Richard Woods
Richard Woods is well known for his architectural installations and re-surfacing of structures that propose an absurd twist on the cult of home improvement and DIY aesthetics. His works are characterised by cartoon-like decorative surfaces, bold patterns and vibrant colours.Woods completed a major architectural commission in South Korea for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, designed an interior for the Comme des Garçons' flagship store in Osaka, orchestrated the mock Tudor overhaul of a private residence in New York and transformed the interior of Cary Grant's former Hollywood residence for its new owner, Jeffrey Deitch. Recent exhibitions and projects include Frieze Sculpture, London (2018, 2013); Chelsea Space, London (2017); Folkestone Triennial (2017); Eastside Projects, Birmingham (2016); Festival of Love, Southbank Centre, London (2015). His works are held in major collections including the Saatchi Collection, London; Arts Council England, London; Victoria and Albert Museum; London; British Museum, London and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Sinta Tantra
Highly regarded for her site-specific murals and installations in the public realm, commissions include; Facebook London (2018); Folkestone Triennial (2017) Newnham College, Cambridge University (2016); Songdo South Korea (2015); Royal British Society of Sculptors (2013); Liverpool Biennial (2012); Southbank Centre (2007). Swifty
Ian 'Swifty' Swift is a dedicated graphic artist. Since embarking on his career at The Face magazine in 1986 he has pursued an individual course which has led him to specialise in the music industry and youth culture aesthetics. Equally at home with a club flyer or a complex movie title sequence, he has successfully run his own practice Swifty - Grafix for over two decades. During that time he has notched up several awards and taught and lectured in colleges and conferences, both in the UK and abroad. In 1997 he launched Typomatic, the UK's first independent Font foundry. While his reputation and his working life is rooted in the typo-graffix world recent exhibitions reveal a shift in Swift's focus towards a body of artworks with a more exploratory and personal dimension. Rob Swain
Rob Swain is an graphic artist, designer and curator working in London. Best known for his work with Gamma Proforma, the record label and arts publisher he founded in 2000. Identity, book design and record sleeves for the likes of DJ Krush, Rammellzee and sheOne are notable recent projects. Supermundane
Rob Lowe, also known as Supermundane, is a graphic artist with over 20 years experience in the creative industry. His signature geometric images that play with line, colour and optical effects, have been published and exhibited worldwide. He has been responsible for designing some of the most groundbreaking independent magazines of the last decade including the alternative children’s magazine Anorak and the award-winning food quarterly Fire & Knives. His practice is defined by a distinctive use of colour, line and typography which can be seen through all his different disciplines from commercial commissions to his personal works. Saffron Frameworks
Based at Thames-Side Studios, Saffron Frameworks make award-winning handmade custom bicycles. Applying their trade since 2010, their contemporary designs and are made using traditional methods, with bikes having raced from the Redhook cirts to the Commonwealth Games. Modern Activity
Modern Activity is a graphic design studio based in London, run by Matthew Appleton. They believe in a hands-on, flexible approach to design, maintaining a print workshop as part of our practice. In collaboration with clients and project partners, they aim to craft imaginative, high quality communications for print and screen that respond to content and circumstance rather than prevailing fashions. Dan Mather
Dan Mather is an independent screenprinter, graphic designer and lecturer based at Thames-Side Studios. As a printmaker Dan specialises in silkscreen printing for graphic designers, illustrators and artists, producing limited edition screenprints by hand. As a designer, Dan works with a variety of clients specialising in design for print with a love of typography and colour. And as a lecturer, Dan visits universities, institutions and museums running workshops on screenprinting and design. Cedar Lewisohn
Cedar Lewisohn is an artist, writer and curator. He is interested in various forms of exhibition platform, as well as experimental forms of writing. Paul Hetherington
Based at Thames-Side Studios, Paul Hetherington is a graphic artist who creates works which are realised in the realm of commercial advertising and graphic production processes such as traditional and emerging print technology, sign-making, packaging, point of sale and various other methods of fabrication. Through this practise he explore a variety of themes such as contemporary culture communication, meaning, absence of–, and mis-communication, the vernaculars of populist graphic design, and its artefacts and methods of production. Hetherington studied Advertising and Graphics in Sheffield and Reading (1982-85), and has practised commercial graphic design since 1985 for a miscellany of fashion, art and photography clients.
CHK Design
CHK Design studio creates visual communication systems. Their visual output spans all media – from digital to analogue; from corporate, web and app design, to magazine, book and exhibition design. They have an analytical approach to design and research is one of the key elements in each of our projects. Clients include SONY Playstation, FIFA, Alexander McQueen, Vespa, Design Museum London, Thames & Hudson, Whitechapel Gallery, Tiffany & Co, Architectural Association (AA), RIBA Royal Institute of British Architects, University of the Arts London (UAL), University Of Westminster and Arup Associates. Director Christian Küsters received his MFA from Yale University and his BA from the London College of Printing. Christian also established the digital type foundry, Acme Fonts. Christian has lectured at Central St Martins College and Camberwell College of Art and has written for a number of leading design publications. He is the author of Restart: New Systems in Graphic Design (Thames & Hudson). He conceived, co-curated and co-designed Design Now – Graphics, an exhibition on contemporary graphic design for the Design Museum, London. Gerry Buxton
An illustrator and printmaker based at Thames-Side Studios, Gerry has produced commissioned illustration and print work for clients including Tate Modern, London City Airport and the Marylebone Cricket Club. His work mixes digital illustration with the time honoured discipline of screen printing. Will Barras
Will Barras is an artist, illustrator and animation director living and working in London. He grew up in Birmingham and moved to Bristol to study graphic design. Will became one of a new crop of young artists working within Bristol's world renowned street art scene which led to Will appearing in Scrawl (Booth-Clibborn Editions, 1999), and becoming a founding member of the artists agency The Scrawl Collective. Will is noted for his representations of fluid movement, unique narrative driven composition and line work. Barnbrook
Barnbrook is one of Britain’s most well-known and highly regarded independent creative studios. Barnbrook’s contribution to design was recognised with a retrospective at the Design Museum in London titled Friendly Fire (2007). They handle projects of varying scales, from the printed and environmental graphics for the Art Basel art fairs to much-discussed David Bowie album covers, to charity works for the British Heart Foundation and catalogues for independent museums. barnbrook.net
Phil Ashcroft
Painter and graphic artist based at Thames-Side Studios. Commissions include work for Aedas, Amnesty International (UK), British Film Institute and Royal Mail. Solo exhibitions include Fallout, CANAL, London (2016); Cave Paintings, Lewisham Arthouse, London (2015); Toxicity, Margaret Harvey Gallery, UH Galleries, St Albans (2006). Ashcroft was a finalist in the John Moores Painting Prize, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool (2014). Ashcroft's live-painting projects include No Soul for Sale, Tate Modern, London (2010); Special Relationship, Scion Space, Los Angeles (2008), and Graffiti Meets Windows 1, Hank-Yu Department Store, Osaka (2002).
