A solo exhibition by painter Scott McCracken.
The title of the exhibition Guesswork refers to how the paintings are constructed in the studio, of working out and reworking, where composing and editing occur simultaneously. Working primarily on a small scale, the motifs in the paintings fluctuate between the diagrammatic and the corporeal, but never fully settle as either. They may be landscape paintings that masquerade as still life paintings, still life paintings that masquerade as abstract paintings. What is there in the pictures is taken to a point of recognisability before it becomes named. It is through their indeterminate nature that the paintings eventually find themselves. - Scott McCracken, November 2023.
