Letters of Protest: The time is NOW and it is overdue!

Overview

Join artist Liz Murray and writer Anita Slater in exploring imagination, feminist activism, and time travel in a creative letter writing workshop in response to Beaconsfield’s exhibition Monica Sjöö The time is NOW and it is overdue! and the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp.

This December marks the fortieth anniversary of Embrace the Base, a mass demonstration in 1983 which brought 30,000 women together to join hands around the US air base at Greenham Common. Researchers Liz Murray and Anita Slater will encourage a creative dialogue between your present and future selves, prompting participants to write letters and poems back to themselves from an imagined future, exploring the role of creativity in protest and in your own self-expression. Using examples of writing, poems, and the Feminist Library’s archive as resources, participants will have the opportunity to write and share (if they’d like to) their letters and poems at the end of the session, having made their own objects of resistance!

The workshop will be followed by a campfire social featuring a couple of myths from The Mighty Goddess, Sally Pomme Clayton's upcoming book.

Letters of Protest: The time is NOW and it is overdue! is part of a week-long peace camp, 17-20 August, in Beaconsfield’s yard with artists and writers Minna Haukka, Harriet Hill, Alexandra Kokoli, Kristen Luke, Anne Robinson, Sally Pomme Clayton, Tansy Spinks.
