Basil Beattie : Paintings from the Janus series

7 Sep-3 Oct 2009

Purdy Hicks Gallery
London SW7 2LQ

Overview

Basil Beattie has been described as "one of the most significant of bridges in the generations of contemporary abstract painters" (Nick de Ville, Professor of Visual Arts, Goldsmiths College, University of London). His career spans the emergence of Abstract Expressionism in the late 1950’s to a more recent emphasis on the ambiguities of signification and ironies of reference that have dominated visual art practice since the 1980’s. He has shown in numerous public exhibitions over the last forty years and was the subject of a Tate Britain Display in 2007. Beattie has been a prize-winner at the John Moores Liverpool Exhibition, twice short-listed for the Jerwood Painting Prize and was made a Royal Academician in 2006.
