Overview

Andro Semeiko, London-based Georgian British artist, creates paintings, installations, and artist's books that seek to capture and construct psychological spaces, focusing on the aftermath of significant socio-political events. For this exhibition, he has produced a series of paintings that, with humour and irony, explore the role of “men”—along with his own place—within the rapidly evolving technological landscape, the looming threat of climate disaster, and ongoing political conflicts.

The paintings employ various techniques and styles. Some sections feature plain abstract patches of colour, while others are filled with detailed, realistic depictions. Certain areas are smooth, while others are thickly textured. These elements merge into a satirical, surrealist collage that amuses and entertains, yet leaves us with unsettling existential questions about the future.

Semeiko has shown his work at the Tate Modern, Royal Academy of Arts, Whitechapel Gallery, Camden Arts Centre, PEER, Gasworks, Saatchi Gallery, Holburne Museum, CFCCA, The Lowry, BALTIC 39, Museum of Contemporary Art Wroclaw, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Seoul Museum of Art, and international art exhibitions including Expander Painting, Prague Biennial 4, Czech Republic, Glasgow International 2012 and 3rd Tbilisi Triennial, Georgia. His awards and fellowships include Kunstanjer from the Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds 2000, British Institution Award from the RA Summer Exhibition 2004, Berwick Fellowship from the English Heritage 2009, and Abbey Fellowship in Painting at the British School at Rome 2022-23.
