Overview

The Gerald Moore Gallery is pleased to present Monsoon Clouds and Golden Orioles – The essential beauty of India miniature painting, a solo exhibition by Jacqueline Synnott from 12th to 28th September 2024 in the Paul Henderson Gallery (1st floor). The private view will be on Thursday 12th September from 6 to 8pm

As a creative artist, Synnott is interested in the age-old ways of depicting people and the natural world, as well as the traditional tools and techniques used for centuries in the creation of illuminated manuscripts and the elaborate patterned borders on an Arts and Crafts mural.

Her Eurasian heritage has been a very valuable and significant influence on her art. Her mother, who is also an artist, was born and raised in Pakistan and she often shared her warm and colourful memories of the rich landscapes, the humid monsoon season and details of certain birds, flowers and trees with Synnott growing up. For the artist, these visuals and stories from her mother’s memory carry a strong sense of nearness within her own paintings.

Synnott takes delight in the planning process of each of her artworks, starting from the most basic and inquisitive graphite sketch on paper. She is also inspired by the archives of many London’s museums and galleries, with the most stimulating influences can be found in a simple cloud formation or a fragile flower petal from a painting or a passing glimpse of an ornate pattern on fabric. She translates these images in her art to reflect the energy, vibrancy and mood of a quiet forest scene, a sombre and volatile stormy sky, or a lone dancing girl on a soft carpet of leaves.

Stylised, bold and bursting with vibrant energy, yet with gentle detail and graceful flowing lines – her delicate paintings embrace the beauty inherent in the traditional art of Indian miniature painting and, at the same time, give a gentle nod to her own Eurasian heritage.

The exhibition is open to the public on Saturdays from 10am to 4pm and by appointment.

Jacqueline Synnott is a London based artist with a Eurasian background.  Motivated to express herself through drawing from a very young age, she has continued her artist’s journey ever since.

Jacqueline holds a BA Honours Degree in French and built a successful career within the international oil sector.  However, she felt drawn to the traditional arts and trained in the classical craft of Western Calligraphy at the London College of Printing.  Her love for fine line, detail and illustration also lead her to develop skills in the art of gilding and Medieval Illumination at the Institut Alcuin in France.

For several years, Jacqueline has devoted her time to mastering the traditional art of Indian Miniature painting.  She has trained in this ancient art at London’s prestigious King’s School of Traditional Arts.  Her curiosity about the use of traditional techniques and methods in painting is always growing, as is her love for vibrant colour, intricate detail and graceful, stylised forms.

The Gerald Moore Gallery is a young centre for modern and contemporary art with learning at its heart. Opened in April 2012, in Mottingham, the gallery is uniquely set within the grounds of Eltham College and is a valuable resource for the students and the local community. The gallery has gained momentum hosting some exciting exhibitions including works by Matisse, Louise Bourgeois, and Cornelia Parker, whilst supporting emerging local artists. In unison with the exhibitions, the gallery's outreach programme works with local community groups, teachers, and schools, creating lasting relationships with our locality. Gerald Moore Gallery was made possible with the foresight and generosity of Old Elthamian, Dr Gerald Moore, many of whose works are archived at the gallery and who has a permanent exhibition on display.
