Overview

Gerald Moore Gallery is pleased to present this year’s Open Call exhibition titled Essential Structures

With artwork devoid of pictorial and decorative content and stripped of external references, Minimalism was one of the most important and influential movements of the late Modernist era of the 1960s and early 70s. Its features included an emphasis on pure abstract form, specific materials, and precise, clean presentation. Its impact can still be seen, not just in the artworld, but also in design, architecture, literature, and music.

The exhibition Essential Structures aims to survey the spirit of Minimalism in the work of artists today, and examine how its principals continue to inspire creativity in a variety of media.

The final artworks in the exhibition were selected by Art Scholars and Music students at Eltham College. The students considered the influences of the ideas of Minimalism and its broader interpretations when making their selections.

During the opening event on Saturday 6th July 2024 from 1 - 4pm, music students from Eltham College will perform pieces inspired by the spirit of Minimalism.
