‘Connect. Reveal. Conceal’ Exhibition Tour with Ferren Gipson and Celia Pym

Join us for a walkthrough of Make Hauser & Wirth’s London exhibition ‘Connect. Reveal. Conceal,’ with art historian, writer and textile artist Ferren Gipson and artist Celia Pym. Their conversation will focus on Pym’s featured works, alongside themes concerning textile practice within the context of the exhibition.

Before the exhibition tour begins, attendees are welcome to explore the Make exhibitions ‘Connect. Reveal. Conceal’ and ‘Strange Friends’ in the South gallery from 6 pm.

About Ferren Gipson
Ferren Gipson is a British-American art historian, writer and textile artist. Her words can be found across mediums, including her books, ‘The Ultimate Art Museum’ (2021) and ‘Women’s Work’ (2022); articles in the ‘Financial Times’ and WeTransfer’s online magazine ‘WePresent’; and the popular visual arts podcast ‘Art Matters.’

Topics in Gipson’s research include exploring intersections between art and popular culture, highlighting the work of women artists and political themes in modern Chinese art. Within her textile practice, she explores themes of labor, matrilineal connections, materiality and color. She is currently a doctoral researcher at SOAS, University of London.

About Celia Pym
London-based artist Celia Pym has been mending clothing since 2007. Working with garments that belong to individuals as well as items in museum archives, she has broad experience with stories of damage, from moth holes to accidents with fire. Pym is interested in exploring the varied evidence of damage, and how repair draws attention to the places where garments and cloth wear down and grow thin. ‘Darning is small acts of care,’ she says, ‘and paying close attention.’

In 2017, Pym was shortlisted for the Woman’s Hour Craft Prize and the inaugural Loewe Craft Prize. Her work has been exhibited in ‘Threads: Breathing stories into materials,’ Arnolfini, Bristol, UK (2023); ‘Say Less’, Herald St, London, UK (2022); ‘Radical Acts: Harewood Biennial 2022, Leeds, UK (2022); ‘Keep Being Amazing’, Firstsite, Colchester, Essex, UK (2022); and ‘On Happiness’, Wellcome Collection, London, UK (2021). Pym is an Associate Lecturer in Textiles at the Royal College of Art and published her first book, ‘On Mending: Stories of Damage and Repair’ in 2023.
