For this exhibition, Gillies has produced a site-specific installation informed by the oldest playable pipe organ in the world — The Valère — dating back to 1435, which is located in Sion at the Notre Dame Basilica. This place has had a long and rich tradition of artists, poets and musicians who have found inspiration there — many of whom shared the same pilgrimage as Gillies to rejuvenate their creative practice. Using sound / sculpture, photography, as well as various marks and traces, this new body of work explores ideas about permanence and transience. Resulting in a spiritual exhibition that thinks about mortality and our place in the world.
