White Cube is pleased to announce an exhibition of paintings and drawings by Ilana Savdie, the artist's first with the gallery. In these new works Savdie explores abundance and the grotesque as paths of resistance to subjugation, fusing the biological with the folkloric. Through bodily acts of pouring and authoritarian acts of containing, areas of stained and blurred colour coexist with thick visible brushwork that lead into smooth, hard-edged passages. The paintings are characterised by a dreamlike, unbound quality yet informed by the physicality and mutability of the body.
