Walking tour: W.G. Sebald’s East End

20 Mar 2022 1.30-3pm

Nunnery Gallery
London E3 2SJ

Overview

The novel itself revolves around the semi-fictional eponymous figure of Jacques Austerlitz - an architectural historian who arrived in England from Prague as a child on the Kindertransport. Over the course of the novel, layers of trauma, memory and forgetting are embedded in both personal and urban landscapes, as the past of Austerlitz and that of wider Europe are unerringly revealed.

The route will follow some of the East End walks Sebald took with Stephen Watts during the research for and writing of the novel.

The walk begins at Stepney Green Station at 1.30pm and ends at the Nunnery Gallery with tea and a chance to look at the exhibition, Explosion of Words.
