5 Jun 2013

Limoncello (formerly Associates)
London E1 6JU

Overview

His New Best Seller (a screening) is an event in which the first episode of the series Confidence Tricks will be shown. The 50 watercolours of 'His New Best Seller' pay particular attention to the idea that people look at, and judge each other, and that they are in turn judged by someone or something else. It contains figures that include Joseph Gandy, Marylyn Chambers, the Caryatids of Berthold Lubetkin's Highpoint II and Phyryn from the famous trial of antiquity. All of these figures come from somewhere and mean something, but rather than explain before you see the work, what or who they are perhaps it is better that they remain strangers and that this pre-amble is used to foreground the relationship of authors and forms they create. Coinciding with this screening, 'His New Best Seller' will be available to be viewed online at http://confidence-tricks.theseri.es Soon to be followed by the second episode, 'The Death of Joseph Gandy'. Confidence Tricks is a biography/melodrama of sorts that concerns the ill-fated 'Comparative Architecture' watercolour project by Joseph Gandy. This dubious or contemptible historical source is used in the work as a means to enact different theatrical, material, historical and conceptual processes that relate to the practice of drawing. Meanwhile, in the gallery, 'Image Acquisition Methods' by Tomas Downes continues to Saturday 15th June 2013
