The Approach is pleased to present Baby Grand, a solo exhibition of new paintings by New York-based artist Anna Glantz. Drawing on influences from both classical and modernist painting styles, Glantz skilfully translates these techniques into complex and ambiguous narratives. Her work operates somewhere between allegory and reality, as the characters and stories she constructs within her images simultaneously refer to true lived experience, whilst also evoking metaphorical or ‘fable-like’ qualities. Subject matter is inspired by popular culture, literature, mythologies and historical painting, often contextualised with household objects and interiors. For Glantz, the ‘reality’ of the painting is complicated and not fully known to her, but perhaps it is most apparent at the point where the reality of the physical surface of the painting intermingles with the reality of the image.
