HILMA AF KLINT : PAINTING THE UNSEEN(SERPENTINE GALLERY)

3 Mar-15 May 2016

Serpentine
London W2 3XA (Serpentine South), W2 2AR (Serpentine North)

Overview

The late Swedish painter Hilma af Klint (1862–1944) is now regarded as a pioneer of abstract art. While her paintings were not seen publicly until 1987, her work from the early 20th century pre-dates the first purely abstract paintings by Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich. Af Klint sought to express the feelings transmitted to her from nature and the unseen spiritual world. This Serpentine exhibition focuses primarily on her body of work, The Paintings for the Temple (1906–15), and numerous paintings from key series, some never-before exhibited in the UK. Co-curated with Moderna Museet Director, Daniel Birnbaum.
