JEREMY DELLER : JOY IN PEOPLE

22 Feb-13 May 2012

Hayward Gallery
London SE1 8XX

Overview

A hugely influential artist for much of the past two decades, Turner Prize-winner Jeremy Deller has helped to rewrite the rules of contemporary art in many respects. Inventively collaborating with varied groups of people, he has developed an aesthetic that he calls ‘social surrealism’ that mixes the serious and the absurd while exploring everyday culture and history. ‘Jeremy Deller: Joy in People’ will incorporate his most important gallery-based works to date, and will also include a new narrative slide show in which the artist discusses his many non-gallery projects and interventions. Featuring major installations, photographs, videos, posters, banners, performance works and sound pieces, the exhibition will include a re-creation of Open Bedroom, Deller’s first solo major exhibition held in his parents’ house whilst they were away on holiday.
