Beginning with pioneering works from the late 1960s – a decade that saw the emergence of the modern environmental movement – 'Among the Trees' surveys a remarkably expansive artistic terrain, including sculpture, painting, installation, video and photography. Drawing on the beauty and visually arresting character of trees – including their complex spatial and architectural forms – the works in this exhibition invites us to consider trees as symbols and living organisms that have helped to shape human civilisation. By turns poetic, adventurous and thought-provoking, Among the Trees celebrates the tree’s enduring resonance as a source of inspiration for some of the most compelling contemporary artists of our time, among them Robert Adams, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Tacita Dean, Peter Doig, Anya Gallaccio, Giuseppe Penone, Robert Smithson and Pascale Marthine Tayou.
