Marta Jakobovits

b. 1944, Romania

Marta Jakobovits was born in 1944 in the village of Santau in Romania. Her career as a ceramic artist began in the 70s after her degree at the Institute of Fine Arts in Cluj. In 2006 the University of Budapest awarded her a doctorate degree in Liberal Arts and in 2013 she was awarded the Hungarian Knight’s Cross of Merit, by the President of the Republic of Hungary. Jakobovits’ ceramics have appeared in books and collections across the world: from the American publication Time Capsule: A Concise Encyclopedia of Women Artists, to films in Romania and exhibitions in Italy, Germany, the Netherlands, Canada, Croatia, Finland, Japan and more. Currently, she works as workshop leader of ceramics courses for children, adults and artists. Her fruitful activity shows how even today, ceramics can be the most generous field of expression for the essence of things. Jakobovits’ ceramic pieces exist in dialogue with the natural world as well as with our spiritual quality. Her works are sections of her inner diary translated into materials. Marta Jakobovits was selected to exhibit at the Kunsthalle Budapest in the group exhibition National Salon 2017 and she has just taken part in a renowned residency in Iran.
