Aug 30 - Sep 21, 2019
David Zwirner is pleased to present a two-person exhibition of work by Trinidad-based artists Jasmine Thomas-Girvan and Chris Ofili at the gallery’s London location. Featuring sculptural works by Thomas-Girvan alongside paintings by Ofili, Affinities will bring to light the rich artistic conversation that exists between these two artists, arising both in response to their shared environment as well as an ongoing dialogue throughout the nearly two decades they have known each other. This will be the first in a series of exhibitions in which gallery artists invite artists whose work they are inspired by to participate in a collaborative presentation.

Nate Lowman’s debut presentation at the gallery will feature a new series of works based on perfunctory crime scene photos of the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, in which a gunman attacked civilians attending the Route 91 Harvest Festival, resulting in fifty-nine deaths. By focusing on these images and rendering their details, his new works re-present disquietingly mundane scenes that simultaneously reveal and mask the violent context of his source imagery. They raise questions about the communicability of certain images and insist on their visibility, while probing the tensions between the everyday and the extreme, presence and absence, and, more broadly, violence and representation.
