A Walk to Listen with Aliaskar Abarkas

29 Mar 2025 3-6pm

Cubitt Gallery
London N1 9HH

Overview

Join us on Saturday, March 29th, as we gather to explore sound, memory, and public space. We will begin by reading a text by Brian Dillon, written in response to Aliaskar Abarkas’ practice, especially his work with the sound of whistling.

Tuning into the sounds of the public sphere, we will allow our thoughts to drift—where the internal becomes a melody, perhaps an altered version of a tune remembered unconsciously. Where does sound begin, and where does it end?

Together, we will question our right to be heard in public spaces, reflect on the act of listening, and immerse ourselves in the surrounding soundscape. After reading and discussion at Cubitt’s gallery space, we will set off on a walk—listening, reflecting, and letting the city’s echoes guide us.

The walk will last approximately two hours, including breaks, and will take us through Calthorpe Community Garden, St Bartholomew the Great Church, and the Barbican Estates and Gardens. The pathways will be largely even.

Bring your poems, thoughts, and melodies—to read, sing, and share, both individually and collectively.

This event forms part of Aliaskar Abarkas' residency with Cubitt, which is part of Feeling Still in a World which Runs, curated by Cubitt Curatorial Fellow (2023–25) Seán Elder.
