Guy Oliver’s newly commissioned work Millennial Prayer, will premiere to coincide with EAF25. The work examines the millennium moment 25 years on, addressing masculinity in politics and culture, coming of age during this era, and how this might impact on our present moment.
Guy Oliver’s interdisciplinary practice employs video alongside text, painting, collage and performance. Oliver has a long-standing interest in issues around male identity, notions of failure and the concept of the tragicomic. His work deftly weaves together references from social and cultural histories, music, advertising and internet subcultures, embodied through a cast of characters and personas. These devices are used to address uncomfortable, complex and urgent subject matter. Alongside Oliver’s dark humour and cutting critique, viewers will find an astute and sensitive portrayal of fragility and vulnerability.
Guy Oliver (b.1982) lives and works in Margate. He graduated from the Royal College of Art, London (MA Painting) in 2015. He was shortlisted for the Jarman Award 2021 and received the Jerwood/Film & Video Umbrella Award 2020.
