Overview

Join us to hear from artist Petra Bauer on the process of political filmmaking in the context of her film Sisters! (2011). Facilitated by curator and producer Frances Stacey, who has worked with Bauer on previous projects, the discussion will cover the artist’s collaboration with London’s Southall Black Sisters and the complexities of merging creative practices with activism to amplify marginalised voices.

The conversation will be followed by a screening of Sisters!, which follows the work of Southall Black Sisters. Find out more about the film here.

Content note. The film includes verbal references to racism, immigration processes, citizenship issues, alcohol misuse, domestic abuse, forced marriage, miscarriage, and sexual violence. While these issues are discussed, the work is visually non-violent and is an affirming exploration of collaborative feminism.

Petra Bauer (born 1970) is a Swedish artist and filmmaker based in Stockholm. Bauer’s art practice is inherently interdisciplinary, as she works with a feminist approach, exploring the intersection between film and politics. Her practice uses a collaborative process, working with varying organisations to bring light to current socio-political issues.

As the current Programme Director at the NewBridge Project, Frances Stacey emphasises co-production and artists’ development in her work. She previously worked as a Producer and Acting Head of Programme at Collective, Edinburgh; was a co-founder of artist led space Rhubaba Gallery and Studios, Edinburgh; a trustee for sex-worker rights organisation Scot-Pep; and is part of the Feminism Art Maintenance group. She has worked on multiple projects with Petra Bauer.

Sisters! is on loan from the University of Edinburgh Art Collection. This exhibition is curated in collaboration with students on the University of Edinburgh’s MScR in Collections and Curating Practices, on which Fruitmarket is a partner.
