Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is delighted to present Erogenous (2023) a new ceramic sculpture by British artist Terence Wilde, the recipient of the Special Judge's Award presented by Pippy Houldsworth as part of the Cass Art Prize 2024. The winner was offered a solo project in The Box, the gallery's micro-project space, with all sale proceeds going directly to the artist.
Terence Wilde’s artistic practice draws on his own experiences with mental health from the perspective of an adult survivor. Working principally in pen drawing on paper, ceramics or textiles, he describes his output as responses to different periods in his life, elucidating his struggles, fears and dreams, and inspiring personal healing in the process. Alongside his art practice, Wilde is employed as a creative workshops’ facilitator at Bethlem Royal Hospital within the Occupational Therapy department.
Although realised on an intimate scale, Wilde’s sculptures are totemic in format, acting as tributes to his personal mental health journey and gay identity. Erogenous is an abstract index of the human body’s erotic zones, with its all-over pointillist composition in black and white punctuated with suggestive words: ‘softly’, ‘lick’, ‘stroke’, ‘caress’, ‘suck’, ‘kiss’, ‘touch’, ‘smell’. The curling protuberances on the vessel's surface have other uses than stimulating pleasure, they act as defences against injury and raise questions about consent, exposure and vulnerability.
Terence Wilde (b. 1963) lives and works in London. He gained a degree in textiles at Winchester School of Art. His work has been widely exhibited including in group exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts, London; Pallant House Gallery, Chichester; and Carl Freedman Gallery, Margate. He is represented by Jennifer Lauren Gallery.
