On Sunday 6th October, from 2 - 6 pm, The Gallery of Everything invites you to its annual Frieze week party for the opening of its new exhibition, The Divine Theatre of Seyni Awa Camara. This multi-gallery opening event will occupy three galleries in Chiltern Street - including Shreeji and Incubator - opposite the Chiltern Firehouse.
Drinks and food will be served. Please RSVP to [email protected] as space is limited.
Seyni Awa Camara (b 1945, Senegal) is an octogenarian sculptor, whose mystical healing figures speak of motherhood, magic and forest spirits.
Born into a family of artisans, Camara was introduced to clay by her mother and soon developed a practice populated by humanoid figures and guided by the divine.
Her inclusion in Les Magiciens de la Terre (1989) at Centre Pompidou (Paris) brought international acclaim. Subsequent exhibitions included Plateau dell’umanità at the 49th Venice Biennale (2001), and 100% Africa at Guggenheim Museum Bilbao (2007).
Camara’s terracotta oeuvre features in museum collections, notably Tate Modern (London), Musée du quai branly (Paris) and National Museum (Oslo).
Opening during Frieze week, The Gallery of Everything presents historic and contemporary sculptures by Seyni Awa Camara in her first UK solo exhibition.
