Overview

Join us for an in conversation with Martin Boyce, discussing his current exhibition Before Behind Between Above Below with writer, novelist and cultural critic, Michael Bracewell.

Martin Boyce’s sculptures rework the textures and forms of the built environment. Using the iconography of the everyday alongside the formal and conceptual histories of art, architecture and design, Boyce creates poetic landscapes that merge interior and exterior spaces. Boyce won the prestigious Turner Prize in 2011 and since 2018 has been professor of sculpture at HFBK Hamburg and was one of the first artists to show in the Fruitmarket’s Visions for the Future strand of programming for Scottish artists in 1999.

Michael Bracewell’s non-fiction includes England Is Mine: Pop Life in Albion From Wilde to Goldie (1997), The Nineties: When Surface was Depth (2002), and several books about Roxy Music, the latest being Roxy: The Band That Invented an Era (2008). Bracewell’s essay On the Art of Martin Boyce is included in the forthcoming catalogue which expands on the works in the exhibition and includes many works outwith the exhibition, cataloguing Boyce’s signature visual language.
