Catarina Félix Machado: Temple - Opening Night

4 May 2024 7-10pm

The Horse Hospital
London WC1N 1HX

Overview

To accompany the unveiling of Sanctum Sanctorum Est, join us for a live performance by Mai Weisz, showing her view on the female figure and the anguish accompanying being trapped in the chains of judgment.  The exhibition will be accompanied by a Soudscape by Douglas Norton, allowing the world of the art to bleed into the space around the frame.

Temple with the collection Sanctum Sanctorum Est , presents a vision regarding the oppression of women throughout history in all religions.

These works highlight the inequalities experienced by women to this day, highlighting the eternal strength of faith and the diversity of interpretations and impact that the word ‘belief’ has on people’s lives

Cat Félix Machado is a painter, whose practice is a reflection of her fascination with natural environments and their relationship with socio-political development throughout history. Most of her work displays a personal view on political, social and religious issues.

Through the creation of worlds  where nature always has the loudest voice, her painting begins and ends in the landscape.

The musical and conceptual component of her artistic work tends to vary in each project or exhibition. Her aim is to explore other ways to express her message, offering different experiences in each of them.

As an artist who seeks much of her inspiration in the mysteries that music provides, she now brings to every exhibition an instrument with three strings and a bow, to complete her vision.

Mai Weisz’s practice is a multifaceted exploration that spans various mediums and themes, challenging perceptions and delving into the complexities of humanity.

Collaborating closely with Cat, they explore the connection between Cat’s paintings and their evocative expression of the invisible world and the realm of feelings. This collaboration merges visual and performing arts, where the paintings come to life, and the performance becomes their breathing, living extension. Influenced by the idea of equality in prayer from Kabbalistic beliefs, Mai believes in the sacred space of prayer where all are considered equal before the divine presence.

Her piece, Alone In The Dark, expresses Mai's perspective on the female figure and transcends societal constraints through storytelling and visual expression, aiming to ignite conversations about liberation and women empowerment.

Douglas Norton is a sound artist who seeks to induce heightened emotional and mental states through his compositions, taking the listener to other places through soundscaping. Using the vague nature of the linguistics of sound his work focuses on creating atmosphere and environment that blur the line between state of mind and state of being.

His work draws heavily from musique concrète artists such as Pierre Schaeffer, avante-garde composers such as John Cage, and modern soundtrack artists such as Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. He experiments with textures and ambience to craft spaces that feel familiar yet inherently otherworldly, transporting the listener to realms reminiscent of those in dreams.

Inspired by the abstract spaces created through other artistic mediums, he has collaborated with Cat on numerous occasions. Interpreting the environments and feelings of her works, his goal is to remove the edge of the paintings, allowing the world of the art to bleed out into the space around the frame, engulfing the viewer within this reality.
