Overview

Trace the evolution of British studio pottery through renowned makers, such as Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, and some of today’s leading artists.

Featuring ceramics from the Pallant House Gallery collection, the exhibition will follow the evolution of British studio pottery, showing the tactile and expressive qualities of clay. It will present a range of makers who represent the rich cultural tradition of the medium and practice.

The exhibition will span the work of leading British potters. It will look at Bernard Leach and his apprentices at the Leach Pottery in St Ives in the 1920s and ‘30s, including Michael Cardew, Norah Braden and Katherine Pleydell-Bouverie. It will examine the post-war modernity of European émigrés, such as Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, and their contemporaries Ewen Henderson and James Tower. The exhibition will also explore key figures in contemporary ceramics, such as Alison Britton, Edmund de Waal, Emmanuel Cooper, Magdalene Odundo and Takeshi Yasuda.
