Chisenhale Gallery
London E3 5QZ

Overview

Scholar Maru Pabón presents ongoing research into the poetics of solidarity across diverse linguistic traditions in Palestine, Cuba and Algeria. In partnership with The Mosaic Rooms.

Maru Pabón is a Puerto Rican scholar and translator. Currently a PhD candidate in Comparative Literature at Yale University, in 2024 she will join Brown University as Assistant Professor of Modern Arabic and Comparative Literature. Her book-in-progress examines the Third-Worldist desire to construct the “voice of the people” across Palestinian, Cuban, and Algerian poetry. Focusing on the work of Mahmoud Darwish, Fayad Jamís, and Jean Sénac, the project likewise makes visible the networks of circulation, translation, and exchange that link these poets together. She has translated literary works from the Arabic, Spanish, and French, and published in numerous journals, including Middle Eastern Literatures, Barricade Journal, and Kohl: A Journal for Body and Gender Research. She is the co-editor of the volume Art and Politics Between the Arab World and Latin America, forthcoming with Brill.

The Mosaic Rooms is a leading non-profit arts organisation and bookshop dedicated to supporting and promoting contemporary culture from the Arab world and beyond in London. Established in 2009, as a project of the A.M. Qattan Foundation. The Mosaic Rooms have dedicated their work to championing creative and critical voices that are often underrepresented.
