Overview

Trinta/Treinta/Thirty celebrates the different voices which have nurtured and promoted the growth of the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America (ESCALA), founded by students and staff in 1993.

Commemorating ESCALA’s 30th anniversary, the exhibition showcases artworks and archival documents from its collection across our Colchester campus. ESCALA thrives due to the continual support of students, staff, and alumni from the University of Essex, as well as Latin American artists and a wider community from across the world. Reflecting the collection’s interest in human rights, environment, indigenous America, pop art, and political activism, we invited collaborators and friends of ESCALA to select the artworks on show.

This exhibition also imagines ESCALA’s future. We have commissioned Rebeca Romero, a London-based Peruvian artist, to develop a new artwork to be shown at Art Exchange responding to the collection and its desire to look to the future whilst also celebrating the past.

Trinta/Treinta/Thirty Years of the Essex Collection of Art from Latin America includes work by Antonio Henrique Amaral, Olga Blinder, Glauco Otavio Castilho Rodrigues, Carlos Cruz- Diez, Wilson Díaz, León Ferrari, Demian Flores Cortés, Carlos Hermosilla, Hudinilson Jr, Graciela Iturbide, Yolanda López, Jorge Macchi, Anna Maria Maiolino, F Marquespenteado, Raúl Martínez, Cildo Meireles, Sandra Monterroso, Mora Brothers, Ogwa, Eduardo Padilha, Hilda Paz, Rebeca Romero, Milagros de la Torre, Cecilia Vicuña, and Mariana Yampolsky.
