Amy Stephens: Objects of Wonder

5 Oct-18 Nov 2023

The Hellenic Centre
London W1U 5AS

Overview

Coinciding with her commission for the public art exhibition Frieze Sculpture 2023, Objects of Wonder by British sculpture and mixed media artist Amy Stephens (London, b.1981, UK) presents works developed in response to her surroundings while on residency at Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre (NiMAC) in Cyprus last year.

Featuring a series of photographic and mixed media artworks that respond to artefacts found in the Cypriot landscape, the exhibition aims to prompt audiences to consider the transformation of natural forms into sculpture. Underpinned by geology and travel, Stephens’ work addresses the reuse and reappropriation of everyday materials.

Amy Stephens (London, b.1981, UK) is a British artist working with sculpture and mixed media. With the use of photography and collage, the artist celebrates artefacts to generate a new perspective about time and our appreciation of what is described as landscape.

In 2022, Amy Stephens was awarded the Henry Moore Foundation Research and Travel Grant to research the question, ‘At what point is a monolith not considered a sculpture?’ Stephens regards monolithic forms as objects of fundamental value and explores how their intrinsic worth can alter according to context and placement.

Stephens will also be exhibiting at Frieze Sculpture in Regent’s Park (20 September – 29 October) and her forthcoming exhibition Persistence of Land is at Bo Lee and Workman, Bruton, Somerset (29 September – 4 November 2023).
