Join us for an evening of experimental sound and spoken word performances by Asmaa Jama, MA.MOYO (Belinda Zhawi) and sanka sounds (Aisha Abdullahi) in the Spike Island gallery.  

Following a poetry reading by Asmaa Jama, MA.MOYO weaves together a sonic tapestry of voice and immersive soundscapes, drawing on themes of ancestry, migration and the natural world. sanka sounds presents a DJ set as a sonic response to Asmaa Jama and Gouled Ahmed’s exhibition ‘Except this time nothing returns from the ashes’. 

ASMAA JAMA 

Asmaa Jama is a Somali artist, poet and filmmaker based in Bristol. As a filmmaker, Jama was commissioned by BBC Arts to make the interactive film Before We Disappear (2021), and by Bristol Old Vic to make The Season of Burning Things (2021) which was screened at the 17th Venice Biennale of Architecture (2021) as part of 100 Ways to say We. Both films were made with artist and costume designer Gouled Ahmed, as part of an ongoing creative collaboration. Jama is a Film London FLAMIN Fellow (2022) and a resident artist at Somerset House Studios. 

MA.MOYO  

Belinda Zhawi is a Zimbabwean literary and sound artist based in London, and experiments with sound and text performance as MA.MOYO. Her work has been featured on various platforms including The White Review, NTS, Boiler Room and BBC Radio, and she has been an artist in residence at Triangle-Asterides, Cove Park, Serpentine Galleries and the ICA in London. Zhawi is the co-founder of literary arts platform BORN::FREE, and the author of Small Inheritances (ignitionpress, 2018). 

SANKA SOUNDS 

sanka sounds (Aisha Abdullahi) is an interdisciplinary sound maker and sonic storyteller whose work maps histories with care. Research is the pillar and grounding force of her practice. Through her focus on spirituality, Islamic mysticism, the divine nature of humanity, and sound and music as a medium for healing, she explores themes of faith and its cosmic influences on human life.
