Overview

The Gallery of Everything presents SOUTHERN SOMEBODIES, a curated response to and visual expansion of the SOULS GROWN DEEP LIKE THE RIVERS exhibition currently on view at the Royal Academy in London.

SOUTHERN SOMEBODIES features the work of over a dozen Black makers from the American south, each of whom has instigated an informal and instinctive personal practice.

The works in the exhibition aim to broaden our understanding of what constitutes a Black American vernacular and to highlight the joy, invention and meaning within.

Artists include Leroy Almon (Georgia, 1938 - 1997), Hawkins Bolden (Memphis, 1914 - 2005), Freddie Brice (South Carolina, 1920 - 1998), Richard Burnside (Maryland, 1944 - 2020), David Butler (Louisiana, 1898 - 1997), William Dawson (Alabama, 1901 - 1990), Sam Doyle (South Carolina, 1906 - 1985), Lonnie Holley (Alabama, B. 1950), Rev JL Hunter (Texas, 1905 - 1999), Charley Kinney (Kentucky, 1906 - 1991), OW Pappy Kitchens(Mississippi, 1901 - 1986), John Bunion Murray (Georgia, 1908 - 1988), Royal Robertson(Louisiana, 1930 - 1997), JP Scott (Louisiana, 1909 - 2000), Mary T Smith (Mississippi, 1904 - 1995), Mose Tolliver (Alabama, 1925 - 2006), Zebedee Armstrong (Georgia, 1911 - 1993), Vernon Burwell (North Carolina, 1916 - 1990), Josephus Farmer (Tennessee, 1894 - 1989), Dilmus Hall (Georgia, 1896 - 1987), Willie Massey (Kentucky, 1906 - 1990), Herbert Singleton (Louisiana, 1945 -  2007), Dr Charles Smith (Louisiana, B 1940), Henry Speller (Mississippi, 1900 - 1997), Jimmy Lee Sudduth (Alabama, 1910 - 2007) and George Williams (Mississippi, 1911 - 1997).
