Join us on the beach outside Newlyn Art Gallery for an all-day event of art and exploration with our Jerwood Newlyn Residency artist Claye Bowler, ending with drinks and an artist talk.
Claye is a sculptor who makes work exploring themes of memory, collecting, archiving, and the queer body. During his residency, Claye has been delving into the interaction between the body and the natural landscape of the sea and beach. Through digging holes, building castles, immersing the body in sand and sea, stacking rocks, and creating patterns, he has been exploring the relationship between the human form and the environment.
- 11.00 – 18.00 / Claye will be on the beach giving you the opportunity to see his works in progress, including drawings, tools, castings, and sculptures that aim to preserve these interactions.
- 18.00 / Meet in the Garden Cafe for pre-talk drinks (pay bar)
- 18.30 – 19.30 / Back on the beach, Claye will give a talk about his work and residency with the gallery
Through to 20.30 / The Garden Cafe will be open
In the event of wet weather, Claye will spend as much time as he can on the beach, but the talk will talk place in The Studio upstairs at Newlyn Art Gallery.
FREE, all welcome.
The gallery will be open until 18.00 if you wish to view the current exhibition in The Picture Room, featuring Elizabeth Loveday, before the talk.
