In Conversation: Ayo Akingbade and Anthea Hamilton

Overview

Artist Anthea Hamilton joins exhibiting artist Ayo Akingbade in conversation to discuss Akingbade’s two new film commissions in her solo exhibition Show Me The World Mister. Together they look at some of the main subjects in Akingbade’s work including her interest in history, placemaking, legacy, and power.

The conversation is followed by a Q&A with the audience. 

AYO AKINGBADE 

Ayo Akingbade lives and works in London. Selected exhibitions include Duette, Towner Gallery, Eastbourne; Jitterbug, Museum of the Home, London (both 2022); Domestic Drama, Halle Fuer Kunst Steiermark, Graz; A Glittering City: Ayo Akingbade with Duchamp & Sons, Whitechapel Gallery; An Infinity of Traces, Lisson Gallery, London (all 2021); Songs From A Forgotten Past, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, Sao Pāulo (2020); Towner International Biennial, Towner Eastbourne; No News Today, Institute of Contemporary Arts, London (all 2019); and Urban Rhapsodies, Film Society of Lincoln Center, New York (2017).

Her films have been shown at Cannes Film Festival, Berwick Film & Media Arts Festival, MoMA Doc Fortnight and International Short Film Festival Oberhausen among others. 

ANTHEA HAMILTON  

Anthea Hamilton lives and works in London. Her approach has often focused on extended study into archives, scientific research and popular culture, combining these with resonant images and objects in unusual and surreal ways. Her research has delved into a wide range of subjects from diverse cultural and historical junctures, including Japanese kabuki theatre and 1970s disco culture and botany. Her interest in the exchanges between art, fashion, design and craft has informed various collaborative projects. In addition, Hamilton consistently considers aspects of presentation beyond her objects and images, applying wallpaper, carpet, vinyl and painted surfaces to the walls and floors, and introducing costume and performance within her work.  

Recent solo presentations include: Cold, Cold Heart, kaufmann repetto, Milan (2022); Mash Up, Museum of Contemporary Art Antwerp, Belgium (2022); Primetime, a commission by Hayward Gallery, London, England (2022); The Prude, Thomas Dane Gallery, London, England (2019); The New Life, Secession, Vienna, Austria (2018); The Squash, Tate Britain, London, England (2018); and Anthea Hamilton Reimagines Kettle’s Yard, Hepworth Wakefield, Wakefield, England (2017). Her work has been presented as part of the 58th Venice Biennale in 2019, the British Art Show 8 and in numerous international venues including the Schinkel Pavilion, Berlin (with Nicholas Byrne), the 13th Lyon Biennale, and the 10th Gwangju Biennale. She was one of four shortlisted artists for the 2016 Turner Prize.
