Robilant+Voena is pleased to announce its participation in NOMAD Capri, which will run from 6 July until 10 July 2022. In collaboration with curator Oscar Humphries, we will be showcasing Isola, a solo presentation of new paintings by James White.
For over two decades, James White’s paintings have been meditations on intimate, austere interior spaces. With a monochromatic, photorealist style, White documents the everyday objects that surround him, i.e., glasses, mirrors, and gleaming faucets. While deeply personal, the sense of familiarity in his subject matter stems towards the universal, particularly since many of the present examples in were made during the various lockdowns of 2020 and 2021. Through his continued exploration of mundane, everyday objects, White further investigates the isolation we have all experienced in recent years. The context of exhibiting White’s pandemic works on an island heightens the artist’s vision, as his colour-absent paintings stand in stark contrast to the bright colours of Capri, offering a compelling positive/negative contrapposto to their surroundings.
James White (born 1967 in Tiverton, UK) lives and works in London. He received his BA from the Wimbledon School of Art in 1989 and his MA from the Royal College of Art in 1991. In June of 2020, he was included in exhibitions at the Fernet Branca Foundation, France and at MARTa Herford, Germany. He has been the subject of solo and group exhibitions at international institutions such as the Goss-Michael Foundation, Dallas, TX; Kunsthal, Rotterdam, the Netherlands; the Olbricht Collection, Weserburg Museum of Modern Art, Bremen, Germany; and the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA), London, United Kingdom among others. His solo show I’ll See You When I See You is now on at Fondation Fernet-Branca, Saint-Louis, France from 12 June 2022 until 2 October. James White is included in FRAGILE! Alles aus glas, Kunstmuseum Ahlen, Germany (19 June 2022 - 16 October 2022). Isola will mark the first time that James White will exhibit in Italy.
