Zully Mejia (b. 1997, Piura, Peru) is a Peruvian American artist currently studying for her MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London, graduating in 2023. She obtained her BFA from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, USA, in 2020. Neglected Narratives at Peter von Kant will be the artist’s first solo show in the UK. Already, her artwork resides in several permanent collections of academic institutions and museums.
Mejia paints empowerment, translating experiences tied to immigration, womanhood and being a person of color. As a Peruvian American immigrant, her work often draws from personal life events, memories, and encounters with people. Her creative process acts as a cathartic exercise — a way to assimilate, structure, and integrate experiences. There is a central interest in depicting historically suppressed visual narratives and investigating the role portraiture plays in identity memorialization.
