Dani and Sheilah ReStack

30 Sep 2022-15 Jan 2023

Camden Art Centre
London NW3 6DG

Overview

For their first institutional exhibition in the UK, Dani and Sheilah ReStack (b. 1972, Columbus, Ohio; b.1975, Caribou River, Nova Scotia) will build a site-specific installation that expands on their exploration of queer desire, family, climate crisis, and collaboration. Drawing on Forrest Bess and his search for transcendence of body and mind through painting and reconfigured corporeality, the ReStacks have tried to make communion with Bess’ Chinquapin existence through a search of water, in which to create communication with Bess in Ohio.

Using video, drawing and photography the ReStacks’ individually, and collectively, push on the constraints of the domestic to yield transformation. Through placement of materials ranging from felt, fur and thread, to angle iron, concrete and wood, they create friction and precarity to construct new hierarchies of sense and order. The exhibition will also include a presentation of their video trilogy: Feral Domestic, and a new iteration of Shameless Light, a performance of love letters by womxn identified queers, originally developed in 2016 after the US election.
