Self-taught artist Roy Ferdinand (b. 1959 – d. 2004) working in late 1980s to early 2000s New Orleans bore witness to issues such as Gun Violence, Drugs, Prostitution and Police Corruption to a soundtrack of Rap and Jazz music during a troubled period when New Orleans was the nation’s murder rate capital. Using everyday materials of paper and marker pens from his local convenience store, Ferdinand captures humour and emotion alongside the violence and despair of the African American neighbourhoods at this time.
