White Cube Mason’s Yard is pleased to announce an exhibition of works by A.R. Penck, comprising paintings completed around and after the fervent time of the artist’s defection from East to West Germany in 1980.
Though he was often associated with the leading German artists of his time, including Georg Baselitz and Anselm Kiefer, Penck’s reinvention of European painting was radically innovative and indisputably singular. Each painting in the exhibition employs the artist’s signature pictorial language termed 'Standart', which sees forms reduced to their most basic tenets, operating at the enigmatic juncture of text, image and sign.
