Overview

Emilio Vedova: documenta 7 will reunite, for the first time, the artist's five monumental canvases from the landmark documenta exhibition in 1982, curated by Rudi Fuchs. These paintings will be shown alongside important works from the 40th Venice Biennale, held in the same year, and a selection of paintings from the 1980s - a period considered the pinnacle of Vedova's career.

Presented in association with Fondazione Emilio e Annabianca Vedova, this will be the artist's first solo show in the UK and will mark the fourth decade since documenta 7 in Kassel. The exhibition will present Vedova as a striking and radical artist, who navigated between tradition and the avant-garde throughout the course of his career.

While looking back to his Venetian predecessors from the Renaissance, in particular Tintoretto, he forged a new path for Italian art in the modern era. Although he was reluctant to be associated with any definitive movements, Vedova's abstract compositions from the 1980s were influenced by developments in expressionism in Europe at that time.
