What The Ocean Remembers presents newly commissioned and recent works by a group of Canadian artists engaged with the creative and critial milieu of the Atlantic Region of Canada: Jordan Bennett, Kym Greely, Thaddeus Holownia, Meagan Musseau with Jenelle Duval, Jerry Ropson, and Camille Turner.
In their artistic practice, these artists are looking and thinking about material memory, memory of the land and sea, both as the residual effects of human action and the reciprocity we need for a sustainable co-existence with the natural world. Their works open a broader critical discussion around decolonisation and historial erasure.
Launched on National Indigenous Day in Canada, with a land-based performance by L'nu artist, Meagan Musseau, the exhibition will feature additional content online through December 21, including live and pre-recorded programming such as artist talks, panel discussions and synchronous IRL actions.
The exhibition is a partnership with the Grenfell Art Gallery and the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia and is co-curated by Matthew Hills (Grenfell Art Gallery) and David Diviney (Art Gallery of Nova Scotia.
