Jason Baerg: Tawâskweyâw ᑕᐋᐧᐢᑫᐧᔮᐤ A Path or Gap Among the Trees

7 Oct 2021–31 Dec 2021

Overview

The journey through 25 years of caring for drawing and painting has found innovative pathways through the conceptual and formal approaches of Cree Métis visual artist, Jason Baerg.

As a first generation new media artist, Baerg has forged fearlessly towards unique ways of utilising emerging 2D, 3D, interactive, immersive, and fabrication technologies.  The dynamic of his first UK solo exhibition charts key contributions of his artistic practice, which include: interactive immersive generative media projection pieces and laser cut painting installations, both of which are the first produced and presented anywhere in the world.

Baerg's artistic investigation has rigorously explored themes such as community, ritual, urban migration, Cree cosmology, native relationality, survivance, an Indigenised Anthropocene, language revitalisation, and Indigenous Futurisms.

The exhibition is a partnership with the Woodland Cultural Centre, an institution that serves to preserve and promote Indigenous history, art, language and culture, focusing on the story of the Haudenosaunee people of the Eastern Woodlands.
