Pippy Houldsworth Gallery is pleased to present a new project in The Box by British artist Joby Williamson from 10 June to 10 September 2016.
Williamson transforms the overlooked and mundane by celebrating the poetic significance of everyday objects. The artist implements different formal methods in order to expose these ephemera, frequently playing with scale, material and humour in order to trigger the viewer’s awareness.
Ships Lost at Sea (2004/16) brings together a collection of scaled-down, miniature tables fabricated by the artist. Made, and assembled, in various states of disarray, several of the tabletops rest forlornly on the ground with only one or two legs. Displaced from their usual context, the stark nature of The Box emphasises the absurdity of this peculiar grouping.
