FIGURE/S: drawing after Bellmer

9 Sep 2021–31 Oct 2021

Taking the radical and transgressive drawings of Hans Bellmer (1902-1975) as its starting point, this exhibition explores the body as a site of oppression, liberation and troubling pleasures. It explores the mixed responses to Bellmer's art and ideas through modern artists: the writer and artist Unica Zürn, his partner from 1953 to 1970, Richard Hamilton and Huguette Caland; and contemporary artists Paul Chan, Neil Gall, Mathew Hale, Rebecca Jagoe, Sharon Kivland, Kumi Machida, Fuyuko Matsui, Jade Montserrat, Jean-Luc Moulène, John Murphy, Paul Noble, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Chloe Piene, Aura Satz, Marianna Simnett and Tabaimo.
