Erben’s vibrant canvases explore the atmospheric possibilities of colour through bold use of pigment and geometric abstraction, recalling the work of Mark Rothko and Josef Albers. His work is based on a contraction of the neighbouring colours, resulting from their harmony or contrast. Erben achieves a special depth in his paintings in which fields of colour serve to expand the qualities of texture and light. Today, Ulrich Erben’s paintings are amongst the most insistent examples of colour focused art. He continues to build upon its sensual diversity and its ability to create both corresponding and contrasting elements.
