1989 The Velvet Revolution: The End of the Totalitarian Regime

1 Nov 2019-3 Jan 2020

Czech Centre London, Vitrínka Gallery
London W8 4QY

Overview

The exhibition curated by photographer Dana Kyndrová brings together photographs by 13 leading Czech photographers capturing ground-breaking moments in modern Czech history 30 years after the fall of the communist dictatorship: the demonstrations against the totalitarian regime in 1988, 'Palach Week ' in January 1989; the student protests of 17 November 1989 and the exhilarating atmosphere that followed. Many of these photographs have now become iconic images documenting the peaceful civic resistance which transformed political domination by one party into a pluralist democracy and made Václav Havel president of Czechoslovakia.
