Overview

Tactics: Power and Play Panel discussion moderated by Kumbirai Makumbe, speakers to be announced soon Part of arebyte Gallery's current onsite exhibition POWERPLAY Expanding on the fluidity between the real and the virtual, Tactics: Power and Play will explore power in relation to the act of playing. When artists conceive work countering and dismantling various forms of subjugation and oppressive systems through technology. In a landscape with a biased allocation of privilege and care, what becomes of the importance of a free-spirited and curious approach when it comes to artistic production and engaging with technology? Is ‘playing’ essential or irrelevant in an activity some engage in for amusement but can also be ‘oppositional’ and purposeful for some? Not naturally but conditionally competitive. We all have a relationship with technology in various ways. With each and every one of us using differing technologies in a multitude of different ways. We all play with technology, to varying degrees, but what are the contrasting ways in which we do so? Drawing on the themes explored in arebyte Gallery's current exhibition titled POWERPLAY, does power and play converge at tactics and if so, who has them and what are they?
