Overview

Coinciding with a major retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York, this extensive solo exhibition in London by seminal Post-War Italian artist Alberto Burri (1915 – 1995) is in celebration of the centenary of his birth. The Mazzoleni family were early supporters of Burri and have built one of the most important private collections of his work. Mazzoleni Art has been working in close collaboration with Fondazione Burri for over 10 years. The exhibition includes early tactile collages in unorthodox materials such as pumice, black tar and sacking, and humped canvases that broke away from the traditional two-dimensional plane. Also on show will be combustione burnt wood and plastic works; welded iron sheets; cracked paintings influenced by the view of the desert Burri could see from the prison camp he was held at in Texas, and his later Cellotex works.
