Overview

In 1974 when folk singer Shirley Collins called her new album 'Adieu to Old England' after the traditional song of the same name, the UK had recently joined the EEC, Irish republican bombings were rife on mainland Britain, McDonalds opened its first branch in the UK, the National Front gained more than 10% of the vote in several London council elections and Britain entered its first postwar recession. In 2014 - a different time yet one with parallels to be drawn - Jeremy Glogan has chosen to call his show of paintings at Christine Park Gallery 'Adieu to Old England'. There is an ambivalence as to how 'Old England' might be perceived. For example: as a dangerous, sentimental confection that never really was; or a socially progressive model of post-war welfare state that actually existed but is now disappearing.
